Label Text:Das Struwwelpeter contains 10 illustrated and rhymed stories. The stories are clear moral tales which often have gruesome outcomes. Heinrich Hoffmann wrote and illustrated the book, first published in 1844, when he could not find a suitable storybook for his three-year old son. Not surprisingly, all but one of the stories focuses on a misbehaving child or children, such as the title character, Struwwelpeter (Shaggy Peter), a slovenly boy who does not bathe or groom himself. Perhaps the most famous story from the book is The Story of the Thumb-Sucker, in which a roving tailor cuts of the thumbs of a little boy who refuses to stop sucking his thumb.
