Label Text:The word HOURLOUPE was coined by Dubeffet, who never explained its meaning. The HOURLOUPE cycle, which began in Summer 1962 when Dubuffet made some ballpoint pen doodles, inspired numerous drawings, books, paintings, and sculpture over the next twelve years. The images were made up of meandering contours and parellel hatchmarks in red, white, blue and black. Dubuffet's idiosyncratic compartmentalization and patterning produced unusual distorted composite figures that were like camouflaged jigsaw puzzles.
