Label Text:In the foreword to this charming publication, artist Antonio Frasconi, who grew up in Uruguay along the La Plata River, writes of the childhood memory that inspired the book: “The Río de la Plata held a constant fascination for me and, particularly, I found a great deal of excitement in watching the migrations of hundreds of birds as they arrived or took leave of their sanctuary for warmer waters.”

William Henry Hudson was an Argentine-born ornithologist who published a two-volume handbook on the birds of La Plata in 1920. Frasconi used Hudson’s descriptions of the birds to accompany his colorful woodcuts.
