Label Text:British artist David Hockney created these prints by drawing directly onto the copper printing plates, resulting in fresh and immediate images. Rather than directly illustrating the familiar fairy tales, Hockney uses bold imagery to capture a mood or a detail in his own interpretation of the stories.

This portfolio represents a small selection of the 39 prints made for Hockney’s 1970 book, Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm, published by Petersburg Press, London (see the book located in the case nearby). Hockney instigated the book project with a 1961 illustration of Rumpelstilzchen. Along with producing all of the illustrations, Hockney was closely involved with the typography and layout. He also chose the six tales, which were translated from the original German edition by Heiner Bastian. The book is one of the finest post-War illustrated books ever produced.
