Label Text:This opera, first staged in Saint Petersburg in December 1913, was the collaboration between poets Kruchenykh and Khlebnikov, composer Matiushin, and painter Malevich. The texts and music were published with a reproduction of one of Malevich’s set designs on the cover. Composed of alogical phrases laced with invented words, the story concerns a group of aviator-strongmen who succeed at the conquest and eclipse of the sun, marking the end of reason and traditional values, but also voicing the hope, said Matiushin, of “an end to future wars.”
