Label Text:The success of the first edition of this book led to a second edition with expanded text and new illustrations by Kazimir Malevich and Olga Rozanova. The poem, “an ironic parody of the archaic devil” according to its author, Aleksei Kruchenykh, narrates in a sarcastic, naïve style a card game in Hell between devils and sinners. The crudely drawn, comical illustrations reflect a variety of native Russian traditions – lubki (popular prints), folk and religious images – to free art from the restrictions of naturalism and common sense.
