Label Text:Samuel Mearne (1624-1683) was a most distinguished puplisher, bookseller, and bookbinder in England. During his career, he acquired the posts of Stationer and Bookseller to the King, and he made numerous bindings for King Charles II. His bookbinding designs reveal some influence from the French, such as Le Gascon, but displayed here is one of the most popular and lovely bindings which is characteristically Mearne in style. The black morocco is tooled all over with gold, and within this design, parts are touched with silver paint (now tarnished and a bit rubbed). As one can see, the design is made up of an elegent curved fillet ending in coiled scrolls, and flowers.
