Label Text:Kazimir Malevich's drawings decorate the covers of this government publication of Nikolai Punin's lectures espousing the reform of art and its teaching. Malevich's designs reflect the Suprematist style he had pioneered. He called Suprematism "the new realism … new, objectless, pure," representing "man's ascendancy over nature." These cover designs were based on Malevich's drawings, but were not produced under the artist's supervision. The background color is foreign to his palette and the tight framing inhibits his desired effect of forms floating in an "open infinity" of white.
